Set top boxes have long been considered mundane and unattractive, often hidden away due to their lackluster appearance. However, the Mempbox breaks this mold by infusing color and playfulness into its design. Unlike traditional set top boxes that prioritize functionality over aesthetics, the Mempbox aims to seamlessly blend into modern living spaces with its bold and vibrant design.
One of the key strengths of the Mempbox lies in its departure from the conventional black plastic box design. Instead, it draws inspiration from the Memphis Style, known for its colorful and innovative furniture, lighting, textiles, and even clocks. By incorporating elements of this iconic design movement, the Mempbox stands out as a unique and visually appealing set top box.
The Mempbox is made using a combination of plastic-ABS-PC and injection molding techniques. Its specifications include a whole model size of 209mmX136mmX55mm, with the main body measuring 209mmX136mmX30mm. The blue part measures 107mmX81mmX25mm, while the yellow and red parts measure 39mmX54mmX25mm.
One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding the right balance of colors inspired by the Memphis Style. The goal was to create a set top box that would not only be visually appealing but also harmonize with various interior design styles.
The Mempbox project began in February 2017 in Shenzhen and was presented as a concept design for Caldero Electronic from Leeds, UK in March 2017. Currently, the design is still undergoing further development and cost calculation, with plans for production to commence in September 2017.
The Mempbox has already gained recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
With its unique blend of functionality and aesthetics, the Mempbox sets a new standard for set top boxes. It challenges the notion that these devices should be hidden away, instead encouraging users to proudly display them as part of their interior design. The Mempbox is a testament to the power of design to transform everyday objects into works of art.
